Sometimes it feels like our bodies betray us by manifesting disfiguring ailments such as atopic dermatitis, commonly referred to as eczema. We will be covering eczema in future blogs more thoroughly but for now we will give an introduction.

Eczema is an itchy, red rash that can appear in a locally limited area such as behind an ear or knee or all over the body. Eczema is often diagnosed in childhood and can be chronic through a person’s life but has cycles of flaring up and cooling off.

There is a cycle that eczema sufferers will recognize of having itchy skin, scratching the itch, damaging the skin, which causes the skin to itch. There has been no cure found for eczema, but there are treatments which can alleviate some of the symptoms. There are ointments that your dermatologist can prescribe that can control the itching and inflammation of eczema. There are yet others to fight infections when they occur and oral drugs to help the itch and to control inflammation. There are also therapies that can be used to ease the pain of eczema. The best first step is to get a consultation with your dermatologist.
