Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment to improve the cosmetic appearance of varicose veins and spider veins. Our doctors perform sclerotherapy as an outpatient procedure in our Boulder dermatology clinic. Sclerotherapy is a quick and highly effective treatment that eliminates 50-80 percent of varicose veins.

What Does Sclerotherapy Treat?

Sclerotherapy primarily treats and eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. It also helps to relieve the symptoms associated with spider veins, including:

  • Burning
  • Aching
  • Swelling
  • Nightly leg cramps

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy uses a very fine, thin needle to inject the sclerosing solution directly into the veins. The solution intentionally irritates the lining of the veins, causing it to swell and close. The vessel turns into scar tissue that eventually fades away from the surface of the skin.

What to Expect Before and After Sclerotherapy

It is important to disclose any and all medications you are taking to the doctor prior to sclerotherapy treatment, including herbal supplements, vitamins and any allergies to anesthetic medications. Your doctor may advise to stop taking iron supplements for a period of time leading up to the procedure. On the day of the procedure, refrain from applying any body lotion to your legs and wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing.

During the procedure, you may feel slight to moderate cramping sensation for a couple of minutes where the veins are injected. Once the procedure has concluded, you may be instructed to wear compression leggings or hosiery to compress the treated vessels. Side effects vary for every patient. You may experience the following side effects post-sclerotherapy:

  • Lumpy or hard veins
  • Raised and red surface area at the injection sites
  • Brown lines or spots
  • Bruising

Most side effects will fade after several days, and the remaining will disappear completely between three to six months. If the veins successfully respond to the treatment, they will not reappear. However, it is possible for new spider veins to develop, in which case you can return for further treatment if necessary.
