Do barrier protect as well as Chemical sunscreen? Titanium Dioxide protects against UVB rays but not UVA, and Zinc oxide protects against both.
Are there an problems associated with barrier sunscreens?
Barrier sunscreen have a long history of use and are seen to be highly effective.
Titanium Dioxide can also irritate some skin types, zinc is generally safe as witnessed by its use as diaper cream. Application of this type of sunscreen is bothersome to some people. it is quite thick and is opaque, meaning it is visible. It leaves a slight white tint on the skin. It works so well because it basically reflects the sun’s rays away from the skin not allowing them to interact with the skin cells.
Are there problems associated with chemical sunscreens?
Yes. Depending on which ingredient is in your sunscreen there are risks. Oxybenzone called a ‘potential hormone disruptor” and retinyl palmitate has been described as a photo-carcinogen.
